Also called the ‘Management Model’, the Performance Model worksheet demonstrates the behavior at the bottleneck at a fixed arrival rate while the number of stations is increased.  The graph and tabular data provided in the Management Model worksheet are used to demonstrate the tradeoff between utilization and service level.

In the ideal state, the bottleneck can operate at high utilization (not starved for work, idle) and the service level will be high (queue times are very low in comparison to work times).  These are goals that naturally contend with one another.

If additional stations are added and the arrivals to the bottleneck remain the same, the utilization will decrease.  The queue time will also decrease which will increase the service level.  The intersection of the two lines in the graph does not necessarily define the ideal number of stations; the graph is to be used as a tool to understand the tradeoff and to make informed decisions about changes in capacity.
