How are Minimum FTEs determined?
The Map Profile resource summary Minimum FTE is determined by comparing the baseline required resource time and the takt time at each activity in the process.
Consider the activity ‘Receive and Review Internal ROI Request’.
The arrival rate is 60 per day and a day is 8 hours long (8 HoursPerWorkPeriod * 1 WorkPeriodPerDay). The arrival rate is, therefore, 60 per 8 hours or 60 per 480 minutes. The time in between arrivals, the takt time, is 8 minutes (480 minutes / 60 arrivals = 8 minutes between arrivals).
This activity requires 3.5 minutes of ROI Clerk time to complete.
The number of FTEs required to satisfy the current demand for the receipt and review of internal ROI requests is 0.4375 (3.5/8 = 0.44).
Note, if an activity physically requires 2 resources to complete it, this may not be reflected in the Minimum FTE value reported. Consider an activity that requires 2 operators for 10 minutes and has a takt time of 40 minutes, the Minimum FTE reported would be 0.5 (20 / 40 = 0.5), not 2.
When interpreting Minimum FTEs described in the ProcessView Detailed Analysis, consider that an FTE in ProcessView works for all of the available production hours.
If, for instance, the HoursPerWorkPeriod is 8, the WorkPeriodsPerDay is 3, and the DaysPerWeek is 5, an FTE is considered to work 120 hours per week (8*3*5 = 120). If ProcessView indicates a need for 3 FTEs and an actual FTE works for 40 hours per week, the actual number of staff required is 9 [3*(120/40)].
